Local physician warns bond failures and sports cuts could hamper recruitment of medical staff

Dr. John Stenger, a physician at Peace Harbor Medical Center and parent of children in Siuslaw School District 97J, used public comment time to urge the board to consider equity in proposed athletic cuts and to underline how district facilities affect community recruitment. “If cuts are to be made to sports teams across the district, then I would ask that they'd be made equally across all sports, not cherry‑picking,” Stenger said.
Stenger said the district’s aging high school building deters prospective medical providers and warned that failure to pass the current bond measure would be difficult to explain to candidates: “Failure to pass the current bond measure and build a new high school will most certainly make it impossible to bring new medical providers to the area,” he said. He asked the community to take the bond measure seriously and noted his remarks were his personal opinions, not an institutional statement from Peace Harbor Medical Center.
