Residents cite Nextera wind project in push for local zoning protections

Several commenters linked the zoning petition and the legal dispute to a proposed Nextera wind project, saying the petition sought to protect neighbors from project impacts including setbacks, decommissioning costs and tax-abatement terms. Speakers described conversations with landowners and stressed health, safety and welfare as the basis for the zoning effort.

One attendee said the petitioners were concerned about how decommissioning and road impacts would be handled and that some residents outside the proposed zone, such as Norma Peabody, would nevertheless live with project consequences. Speakers urged more face-to-face engagement with developers: "I'd like to have more conversation with them at the table," one speaker said, calling for negotiation rather than litigation.

The Nextera discussion fed into the larger petition debate: proponents said petition language had been adjusted for recent legislative changes and that the petition and its accompanying regulations were intended to be applied together if approved. Opponents and some commissioners warned that appointed planning commissions could adjust or weaken regulations after the fact, which proponents said would undercut the petitioners’ intent.
