The Newport Board of Commissioners voted to approve Order No. 66, authorizing the city to purchase nine parcels on the 600 block of Monmouth/Grama Street for a stated acquisition price of $3,800,000 and directing the mayor to execute necessary documents.
Staff presented a detailed analysis behind the recommendation and said the purchase would allow the city to control future redevelopment of the block. "This is 9 separate parcels; however, it essentially functions as 6," the presenter said, adding the "acquisition price is 3,800,000." The clerk conducted a roll call and each commissioner on the record voted yes.
The order authorizes the mayor to finalize closing and execute related documents; staff told the board the city will move quickly to secure and stabilize the properties, then issue a request for proposals (RFP) for redevelopment. No final redevelopment plan was adopted at the meeting.
The vote concluded a special meeting at which staff explained appraisal and operational considerations, zoning effects, environmental clearance, and short-term stabilization budgets. The mayor said the purchase allows Newport to "turn a page" and invited public input during the RFP phase.
Provenance: topic introduced in presentation and justified in staff slides and board remarks.
