Chelsea Tubbs, associate superintendent of educational programming for the Madison Metropolitan School District, opened a public hearing on renaming Albion Elementary and said the district had received 72 written comments on the proposal.
“We received a total of 72 written comments for the LVM renaming for this evening,” Tubbs said, and she summarized the district’s tally and major themes during the hearing. A single live commenter, introduced as Isis, urged the board to name the building for her late mother, Stephanie Bernard, whom she described as a 32-year district educator devoted to early literacy.
Tubbs read the written-submission breakdown: 35 submissions (48%) supported naming the school for Stephanie A. Bernard; 13 (18%) favored a geographic or nonperson name; five (7%) supported Jeffrey Clay Erlanger; and four (6%) opposed renaming and preferred keeping Albion. Smaller numbers supported other shortlisted individuals, including Gaylord Nelson, Freddie Mayfield, Ada Deer and Lucia Núñez.
Tubbs said the district will keep its official 14‑day public comment window open and invited additional written input. No formal vote or board decision occurred at the hearing; Tubbs said absent registered live speakers would be contacted and given additional opportunities to testify.
