Lakeshore Drive homeowners petition for speed reduction; town explains multi-step approval

A resident representing Lakeshore Drive homeowners asked the Town of Mamakating to pursue reducing the speed limit on their narrow, winding dead-end street from 30 mph to 15 mph, citing increasing numbers of children and repeated instances of speeding.
"We are requesting that the town consider reducing the speed limit from 30 miles an hour... down to 15," said the resident, identified in the meeting as Mister Silverman, who presented petitions signed by 19 of 25 homeowners. He described a recent event in which a vehicle appeared to travel 40'45 mph through the cul-de-sac and nearly struck trees.
Supervisor Peter Goodman explained the formal process: the board must pass a resolution requesting the change, after which the request goes to the county highway department and then to the state for a traffic study that applies the state's formula to determine whether a reduced speed is warranted. Goodman estimated the process could take between six months and a year. A board member suggested short-term traffic-calming measures (rubber pedestrian delineators or signs) while the formal process proceeds.
The board indicated it would bring a resolution forward at the next meeting to start the county/state process and to evaluate interim traffic-calming options.
