Residents press council for details on Leon Avenue sewage spill; township reports testing and limited online notices

During the public portion of the Oct. 14 meeting, resident William Spych asked how much fecal matter and raw sewage had been removed after the Leon Avenue sewer line rupture and whether any waste had been disposed into local lakes. Mayor Hutchins said he did not have exact volumes and — "to the best of his knowledge it was not disposed of into Lake Lonnie or Swedes Lake." Administrator/Clerk Jamey Eggers said "there were four samples taken from the lake and sent for review" and that results were reported to the Township.
Residents pressed why broader notifications had not been distributed; officials said homeowners on Leon Avenue were notified the evening of the spill but information had not been posted to the Township website. Council and staff said notifications to surrounding residents would be considered for future incidents and that the Township received an environmental sampling report from the testing.
