On Oct. 14, 2025, the Delran Township Council adopted Ordinance 2025-18 to create a Police Canine (K‑9) Unit within the Delran Township Police Department. The ordinance lists authorized duties for the unit — including narcotics and explosives detection, tracking and locating missing persons, and community demonstrations — and grants the chief of police authority over handler selection, acquisition, training and standard‑operating procedures aligned with Attorney General guidelines.
The ordinance requires the council to appropriate annual funding for acquisition, training, veterinary care and equipment and authorizes acceptance of donations or grants to support the program. Council opened the public portion and heard no comments; the ordinance was adopted on a unanimous roll call (Ayes: Morrow, Apeadu, Smith, Jeney). The ordinance specifies that police service dogs are official police equipment and requires the Township to maintain appropriate liability insurance.
