A school representative for Hillis ISD told the Jefferson County Board of Education that Title I parent-engagement events and targeted digital practice helped students show gains on last year’s assessments. "We greatly appreciate the opportunity to share with you our success and our goals this year," the presenter said, and described a parent-night PE activity that let parents act as students so children could practice using tested concepts in low-stakes settings.
Teachers and intervention staff credited iReady and small "bubble" tutoring groups for improving students who were a few questions away from proficiency. One teacher said the main barrier was unfamiliarity with the test platform rather than lack of content knowledge and described using SEL prompts to reduce anxiety so students could demonstrate what they already know. The school reported tutoring 36 students in a bubble group and said two pilot schools have begun using the same strategies.
Presenters also asked the district for facilities and equipment help. They said a back-playground area behind the cafeteria does not drain and remains muddy, and requested district assistance with drainage. They additionally requested seven more classroom radios to support outdoor instruction and make head-counts and emergency calls easier; the presenter said the radios cost about $300 each. The presentation closed with offers to share iReady materials and to continue coordinating with the district on next steps.
