The Village of Salem Lakes board approved Resolution 2026.07-170 asking Wisconsin lawmakers to limit battery energy storage systems (BESS). The administrator presented the item as a mirror of similar resolutions adopted by neighboring municipalities and recommended the village send a request to state lawmakers.
The administrator noted the village's zoning rewrite vendor, Von Briesen, has begun drafting a related ordinance and that a local zoning ordinance draft is under legal review. "This is a resolution mirroring the ones placed before our neighbors who replaced similar ones with concerns on the battery energy storage systems," the administrator said. A trustee moved to approve the resolution, a second was recorded and the board voted in favor by voice vote.
No additional ordinance language was adopted at the meeting; staff said a draft zoning ordinance is undergoing legal review and will appear in short order.
