The Town of Bath held the required public meeting July 15 to offer residents an opportunity to ask questions about a FEMA-funded GIS mapping project that would geotag underground water assets.
Council member (speaker 2) described the budgeted cost for the mapping work: "The project costs $80,005.05, and the town has a match of $20,139," and said the application must include proof the town provided a public meeting. Officials emphasized the mapping will document existing infrastructure (valves, pipes and other buried assets) rather than natural water features; a council member clarified, "this is going to be mapping our infrastructure — water systems and not naturally occurring water."
Attendees pressed for technical details: whether the mapping will assess pipe age and how the work integrates with ongoing water-system repairs. Council and staff said geotagging will incorporate existing records (where available) and that the mapping is intended to make future repairs and leak detection more efficient. The chair explained recent operational gains: "We were pumping 400,000 gallons a day... Now we're pumping about 300,000 gallons," noting reduced losses and saying the mapping would further improve system awareness.
The council confirmed staff will submit the grant this month and that, if funded, money would be available in the following fiscal cycle. The meeting record was taken as the public notice required by the grant application process.
