The Tippecanoe County Community Corrections Board approved an updated chemical-agent policy that aligns closely with sheriff’s department standards and adds an internal chemical-agent training coordinator.
Staff presented a redlined policy that clarifies which staff are trained and required to carry chemical agents and establishes a training coordinator role. "We want to meet the standard, but we want to exceed it in some fashion," the director said, noting the policy draws from Indiana code and law-enforcement best practices. The update reflects internal training resources and identifies a staff member who will be designated as the coordinator for chemical-agent training.
Chief Ferguson moved to approve the chemical-agent policy and Commissioner Brown seconded; the board voted by voice and the motion carried. Staff said the changes were developed in conjunction with sheriff's department trainers and will be implemented with in-house trainers.
