The Chair said repurposing wells is an "emerging technology" and that a Colorado company is exploring direct use: "We're gonna be repurposing oil and gas wells for geothermal," the Chair said, adding feasibility is largely contingent on the condition of well casing. Commissioners noted there is grant funding available for research and pilot studies but emphasized technical constraints and site-specific geology will determine whether direct use is practical in Dolores County.
Board members said they will continue dialogue with coalition partners and research teams to explore potential pilot studies and identify grant opportunities.
