Dolores County commissioners voted to approve a contract allowing the county to use a private vendor (described in the meeting as an "Auto Agent") to offer taxpayers the option of making 12 monthly tax payments.
The Treasurer explained the vendor operates a cloud-based service that lets taxpayers make installment payments to the vendor, which then remits funds to the county at statutory deadlines. "They allow for 12 monthly payments on taxes," the Treasurer said. The Treasurer also told the board the company would handle customer service and payment processing and that "there's no fee to us." The Treasurer warned, however, that the vendor's contract contains a three-year commitment with potential termination fees; the Treasurer and legal staff said they were negotiating those terms.
Following discussion the Chair moved, and the motion was seconded, to approve the Auto Agent contract through the Treasurer's office "subject to legal review". The board approved the motion by voice vote. County Attorney advised the board that the contract language should be finalized and reviewed for any repayment or termination obligations prior to final execution. The Treasurer said the service would be optional for taxpayers and that rollout and outreach (web notices, pamphlets) would accompany implementation.
