OPI and Montana Digital Academy present version 2 K'12 AI guidance and statewide supports

Montana Digital Academy and Office of Public Instruction staff presented a second draft of statewide K'12 AI guidance that tightens language on student-facing AI use, formalizes a six-month revision cadence and emphasizes teacher- and school-focused supports.
Jason Eifford and Caitlin Byers described practical supports including a vetted-tool catalog for student-data privacy, an AI help desk (ai.help@mtd.org) and an AI educator-coach program that trained 72 coach participants across the state this spring. "Our goal is to make sure that schools across the state are able to implement both the guidelines and think about the practical day to day of what it looks like to have AI in the hands of professionals in their school systems and AI in the hands of students," Caitlin Byers said.
Presenters told the board they will recruit diverse representation for continued revision, prioritize support for smaller/rural schools that lack leadership capacity, and hold regional outreach and training ahead of the school year. The board encouraged continued transparency and ongoing public posting of agendas and minutes for the six-month review cycle.
No formal board action was taken; OPI and Montana Digital Academy will solicit feedback through July 31 and continue to support school implementation.
