The board voted to implement policy EHB and accompanying procedure EHBAR on cybersecurity after the policy was presented as a first reading at a previous meeting.
The superintendent described the purpose of the policy as guidance for responding to possible ransomware attacks and system lockouts that could prevent district staff from accessing current systems even if historical backups exist. “There are backups, but when they come in and lock you out of something, you can't even get into your backups because it changes all your passwords,” the superintendent said, describing tabletop exercises conducted with the ESD’s technology specialists. The superintendent also said the district purchases tech services from the ESD and that the district’s PACE insurance premium is increasing roughly 21% in part because of cyber coverage considerations.
Board members carried the motion to implement EHB/EHBAR. Staff said the district will continue tabletop exercises and staff training to reduce phishing risk and to maintain insurance compliance.
