Board approves semiannual student-safety report, cites decreases in incidents

The Board of Education of the Toms River Regional Schools voted to approve the district's semiannual Student Safety Data System (SSDS) report covering Jan. 1–June 30, 2024. The presentation noted a 21% decrease in reportable offenses and a 41% decrease in confirmed harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) incidents compared with the prior reporting period.
"For the period of January 1 to 06/30/2024, there was a 21% decrease in reportable offenses and a 41% decrease in confirmed HIB compared to our November 2023 report," said Mr. Thomas during the presentation. The report listed 131 acts of violence, 24 damage-to-property incidents, 9 weapons incidents, 62 substance-abuse incidents and 52 confirmed HIBs, for a total of 278 incidents in the reporting window.
Board member Kidney moved to approve the SSDS report; Howe seconded and the motion passed on a roll-call vote. Board materials noted the district's partnerships with the Toms River Police Department, the Health and Wellness Coalition, the YMCA and other community organizations as part of its strategies to reduce incidents and support students.
The board indicated it reviews SSDS data monthly and directed staff to continue analyzing demographics, school-climate data and interventions in follow-up reports.
