Socorro ISD staff told the board on July 21 that preliminary 3rd-grade assessment results show the district holding steady in early literacy while math performance slipped slightly. "Overall performance held steady at 58" for 3rd-grade reading/language arts, reported Sergio Maldonado, director of research and evaluation, who contrasted the district's results with state (50%) and Region 19 (52%).
Maldonado said preliminary math 'meets' performance was 46%, slightly below the district baseline of 48% and noted that the district still outperforms the state (45%) and Region 19 (~43%). School improvement officer Gina Pacheco recommended reevaluating some long-term goals after establishing baseline data and highlighted instructional shifts—such as the adoption of Building Thinking Classrooms and STEMscopes—to emphasize mathematical reasoning rather than computation alone. "We're really focusing our efforts on building thinking classrooms," Pacheco said, describing group problem‑solving strategies and vertical whiteboards purchased to support collaborative math work.
Trustees pressed staff on achievement gaps for special education and emergent bilingual learners; staff said Title funding prioritization, campus tiering, and educator support network visits will target campuses with greater needs, and that district-level stretch goals and progress measures will be presented at the next board meeting.
