District updates K–12 curriculum to reflect 2023 ELA and math standards, emphasizes foundational skills

Curriculum staff (Speaker 4) told the committee the district completed extensive summer work to align K–12 curriculum documents with the 2023 ELA and math standards. "Most of them that you'll see are just the actual revisions to math and ELA to our standards," the presenter said, pointing to crosswalks that compare the 2016 and 2023 standards.
The presenter said the biggest revisions were in kindergarten through grade 5, highlighting a renewed emphasis on foundational phonics and writing, a shift from "measurement and data" to "measurement and data literacy," and the use of visual models for fractions. Staff also said interdisciplinary standards were added across music, art and other subject areas. When asked whether climate change was included in the standards, the presenter said climate-related concepts are embedded across subject areas and do not require new whole-class textbook adoptions; the district has obtained updated online units from vendors where needed.
The committee received summaries and crosswalk documents and was told ELA adoption is required for the year while math timing varied by state guidance, but staff believe their current materials meet the new rigor. The presenter offered to provide additional examples or pilot materials if the board requests them.
