Board reapproves updated special education manual; district to provide statewide training

Administrators presented an updated Special Education manual required by federal rules and asked the board to reapprove it after the state released further changes. The special education lead told trustees the redline version showed substantive changes to the Specific Learning Disability (SLD) category and that the department would run trainings statewide to implement the new classification guidance.
The staff reported current special education caseload numbers: "as of today, we are at a 189 students that are receiving special ed services district wide," and noted 49 students district-wide are on 504 plans. The department has purchased a training program (ARIS 101) for severe autism and will host other IEP and SLP trainings. Trustees voted to approve the updated manual to ensure compliance with federal requirements and to allow staff to pursue reimbursement for training-related costs where available.
