District stresses value of full-time nurse amid budget talk; says nurse saves external training costs

District staff told the committee the district's current registered nurse works full time and performs medical delegations, emergency-preparedness work and training for staff. "Our current registered nurse is working full time. We do there is no mandate for a nurse," an administrator said, explaining the district reinstated the nurse because of the volume of students with complex medical needs.
Staff said the nurse's training work saves the district money because it avoids hiring outside trainers for diabetic maintenance and allergy management, and added that insurance rates could be affected by dropping the nurse. Committee members asked whether a full-time nurse is necessary and staff answered that, given coverage of three buildings and emergency responsibilities, they consider a full-time nurse appropriate.
