Asiadu told the court he followed another SUV and said, “I slammed on the brake,” but that he could not stop in time. The state’s representative deferred to the judge’s judgment; Hayward said she believed the driver had sufficient opportunity to slow and stop. “Once you see a bus pull over … you should be preparing to stop,” Hayward said, explaining the legislature’s intent to protect children. The judge denied the appeal and ordered the $1,000 fine, offering 90 days to pay.
