Mayor Michael Hannon presented a proclamation declaring July 23 Disability Pride Month in Newark and highlighted the city’s commitment to accessibility, inclusive programming and an upcoming All Abilities Park.
Hannon praised Alex Reyes for his advocacy work and public service at the state level, saying Reyes helped advance legislation. “Alex also played an instrumental role in helping draft 2 bills that were later signed into law,” Hannon said, naming “Senate bill 639” (2021) and “Assembly bill 248” (2023) as examples cited during the recognition. Representatives from Deaf Plus and other advocacy groups joined the council at the podium.
Alex Reyes introduced himself to the council and audience: “For the rest of you who do not know me, my name is Alex Reyes. I'm your, Bay Area Council Member for CALA CDD based in Sacramento,” he said, and expressed gratitude for the recognition and inclusion.
Council members and community advocates emphasized continued work on accessibility, digital inclusion and updates to the city's ADA transition plan. City staff listed initiatives for 2026–2028 including the ADA transition plan update, inclusive programming, and ride‑on Tri‑City access efforts. The city presented certificates to community advocates and invited the public to participate in upcoming accessibility planning.
