The Piqua City Commission on July 21 voted to table approval of the draft minutes from its July 7 meeting after a resident said the packet’s draft did not accurately reflect her public comments and threatened legal action if the record was approved without correction.
Commissioner Simmons moved to table the minutes, citing a letter from a concerned citizen who said the draft minutes “do not accurately reflect the substance” of her public comments and asked that corrections be made. City legal counsel told the commission that minutes are not required to be verbatim; they must instead contain sufficient facts to permit the public to understand the discussion and the rationale for decisions. “Sufficient is defined as as much as is needed,” the counsel said. After discussion, the roll call vote recorded support for tabling the minutes.
