The Canton Township Planning Commission voted to approve a modification to the site plan for Bright Beginnings Learning Center at 6512 North Canton Center Road, relocating required foundation trees and shrubs from the area east of the front entrance to the north and west sides of the building. Staff presented the change as a safety and accessibility measure to preserve visibility and pedestrian access between the front door and the attached playground.
Patrick, planning staff, said the revised plan meets the ordinance’s numeric foundation‑landscaping requirements even though it removes a planting bed east of the entrance. “The material that would otherwise be required on the north side, they moved over to the west side of the building,” he said, and staff counted four trees and 20 shrubs required around the north and west sides to meet Section 5.03(a)(4). Architect Barb Potter told the commission the applicant substituted slightly fuller plant material so the landscape count satisfied ordinance minimums while reducing maintenance and cost.
Commissioner Watkins moved to approve the modification pursuant to Section 5.07 of the zoning ordinance; Commissioner Singh supported the motion. A roll‑call vote was taken and commissioners present recorded unanimous support. The chair declared, “Motion passes.” The approved change allows the operator to keep the expanded playground access and preserves the same total number of required plantings while altering their location.
Next steps: construction may proceed under the amended site plan; staff said the project is already under construction and close to opening.
