Selectboard to revisit Highway work‑week policy; Supervisor hiring to guide final schedule

The Selectboard on Feb. 3 continued a discussion about the Highway Department’s regular hours, weighing the current four 10‑hour day schedule against alternatives. Town Administrator Trish Waugh said the crew currently works four 10‑hour days with Fridays off; member Wayne suggested four 9‑hour days with a half‑day Friday for vehicle maintenance.
Selectboard members noted that the town’s personnel policy lists a Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. workweek. Member Ken Stockman recommended maintaining policy hours until a new Highway Supervisor is hired so the supervisor can set schedules and manage overtime and performance. The board directed Trish to draft revised Winter (Nov. 2–Apr. 14) and Summer (Apr. 15–Nov. 1) schedules for review at the March 3 regular meeting and asked that the Highway crew be involved in crafting the new policy.
Members emphasized recruitment outreach for the supervisory vacancy: Trish said the job posting is on the town website, the Vermont League of Cities and Towns classifieds, Front Porch Forum and in local newspapers—Addison Independent and Seven Days—where the listing will be featured at no charge. The board agreed the candidate search and the eventual supervisor’s judgment should guide any permanent change to standard hours.
No final schedule was adopted at the Feb. 3 meeting; the board set a timeline for a March policy review and additional staff and crew engagement before any formal change.
