Bemidji board adopts three goals for 2026–27 focused on growth, enrollment and a balanced budget

The Bemidji Public School District board on July 20 approved three districtwide goals for 2026–27 aimed at raising academic achievement, stabilizing enrollment and balancing the budget.
Superintendent Jeremy Olsen told the board the academic goal retains focus on MCA benchmarks while adding a 2% improvement target over last year and a complementary growth target measured by FastBridge: “our growth target is 60% above typical growth for FastBridge,” Olsen said, calling the target “a fairly aggressive goal” intended to push instruction and interventions. Board member Anne asked that the packet spell out MCA as the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment and ADM as average daily membership; Olsen agreed to add those clarifications.
On enrollment, Olsen said the district set a target of 83.83% market share based on state data to measure how many resident students attend Bemidji schools. The financial goal is to present a balanced FY2027 budget at audit as part of a three‑year plan to eliminate the district’s structural deficit. Chair Todd Haugen asked for discussion before the vote; the motion to adopt the goals was moved and carried by voice vote.
The board’s action sets targets for staff and administrators to align curriculum, student‑growth monitoring and outreach work this school year; Olsen emphasized the goals are intended to be both ambitious and measurable.
