Mayor Donovan urges infrastructure planning: sewer capacity, street inventory and a Transportation Benefit District renewal

An attendee asked how Mount Vernon plans to address aging infrastructure. Mayor Peter Donovan said infrastructure elements are part of the comprehensive-plan update and cited sewer-treatment capacity as a constraint that requires strategic planning rather than ad hoc growth. "We have a sewer treatment plant in, South West Mount Vernon, and it has a set capacity," Donovan said, adding that separating stormwater from wastewater can extend treatment capacity.
Donovan also described the city’s street-assessment program using a consultant’s vehicles with cameras and sensors to grade pavement and prioritize repairs. He said the Transportation Benefit District renewal will appear on the ballot this November as a renewal (not an increase) to direct a portion of sales tax receipts to infrastructure.
