Mount Vernon to streamline ADUs, roll out preapproved designs and pursue density bonuses

Mayor Peter Donovan announced steps intended to accelerate housing production: over-the-counter permitting sessions for small projects and a preapproved accessory dwelling unit (ADU) program that will offer a catalog of city-approved designs to simplify design, permitting and construction. "So if you've got a smaller project at your house... we offer time on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons for you to come in and sit down with city staff," Donovan said.
Donovan also described the city’s affordable-housing density bonus, saying it has produced 18 new affordable units on the market and 11 more in the pipeline. He noted the state requires the city’s comprehensive-plan housing element to accommodate growth and that the state projects Mount Vernon will need to plan for roughly 4,000 new housing units over the next 20 years.
