Mayor Peter Donovan described coordinated enforcement and remediation at a problem property on Garfield Street, which he said had hosted drug manufacturing and several drive-by shootings. "This house has a long history of being a problem for the neighbors," Donovan said, and added that the property has changed hands to an owner who specializes in cleaning up properties that include biohazard conditions.
Donovan credited Mount Vernon police and county partners for serving warrants and removing those responsible, and he described the city’s approach as enforcement paired with offers of services for people living in encampments: "We're removing encampments around town on public property as early as possible before they grow inside. But again, not just kicking people out of spaces and hoping that the problem goes away."
