Mayor Peter Donovan told the audience that the city navigated a ‘‘pretty massive budget deficit’’ and has emphasized fiscal accountability and public transparency while making staffing investments. "When I did the state of the city here last May, I told everyone about a projected 17% deficit in our in our general fund," Donovan said.
Donovan said the city oversees a $93,000,000 budget and roughly 296 employees and described hiring progress tied to voter-supported levy promises: "As of today, the city has added the new police officer that we promised... We've hired, trained, and sworn in 6 new firefighters already, which means that fire station 3 is fully staffed today," he said. He invited residents to inspect audited books and attend upcoming meetings where budget and infrastructure tradeoffs will be discussed.
