Mountain View board refers Hillsdale and PragerU materials to curriculum committee

The Mountain View School District Board voted to refer Hillsdale’s K–12 history/civics materials and PragerU supplemental items to the district’s newly proposed curriculum committee for formal consideration. Vice Chairman Larry moved the referral, saying the item should be "the 1st item that the curriculum committee... consider," and trustees voted to send both items to the committee for review.

Trustees and staff discussed the process and constraints for review under Idaho law. Superintendent (speaker 9) and other board members noted that sample copies are typically requested through publishers or the state and that the committee must meet statutory composition requirements under Idaho Code 33‑5‑12(a). "If you're interested... sample copies were ordered," a trustee explained, and staff confirmed the state and publishers provide limited samples and rubrics that the committee will use to score materials. Trustees emphasized that curriculum cannot be adopted tonight and must go through the committee rubric process and legal review before any classroom use.

The board also debated practical next steps: who will serve on the committee, how materials will be secured for review, and whether field visits to Idaho schools using Hillsdale materials would be helpful. Trustee 4 suggested the curriculum committee make a trip to schools currently using the materials; Vice Chairman Larry offered to forward the Hillsdale website and help coordinate sample access. The board asked staff to assemble materials and schedule the committee’s first meeting.
