During the public comment portion of the meeting, Tiffany Perkins urged trustees to ensure that board actions protect a well-rounded education and meaningful local governance as the district pursues academic improvements.
Perkins said the district has been described as "failing" based on a single campus rating and asked that the guardrails trustees vote on protect athletics, fine arts, career and technical education, advanced academic opportunities, clubs and extracurriculars alongside instruction. "These programs are not distractions from instruction. They are an essential part of education," she told the board. Perkins identified herself to the board: "My name is Tiffany Perkins and I am a Democratic nominee for State Board of Education."
Perkins also asked that the guardrails safeguard transparency and public engagement so major district decisions cannot occur without community input. Her remarks preceded the superintendent's presentation and the board's discussion of guardrails and goals.
