Superintendent Massey outlines Project Accelerate and AIM to raise early-grade achievement

Superintendent Massey told trustees the district will combine an Accelerated Instructional Model (AIM) for grades 3–10 with a new Project Accelerate focus on pre-K–2 to create sustainable gains across Beaumont ISD.

"What if 90% of 2nd graders walked into 3rd grade already reading at or above 3rd grade level?" Massey asked the board while outlining the longer-term strategy of shifting resources earlier in students' schooling. She said Project Accelerate will include summer bridge camps for 2nd graders (optional but offered to all), expanded NWEA assessments from kindergarten through 10th grade, curriculum redesign and an executive director dedicated to the initiative. Massey described AIM as a 90-minute instructional cycle with 50 minutes of direct instruction, a 10-minute assessment and a 30-minute differentiated follow-up led by student support coaches.

In response to board questions, Massey said the bridge camps will be optional and "every 2nd grader is gonna be asked to go," and that reading and math substitutes will be internal resident teachers and coaches to ensure consistent lessons. Principals who spoke said they were optimistic and prepared to begin the model; Dischmitt Elementary Principal Coleman called the collaboration "exciting" and said principals see how the model could work in their schools.

The timeline Massey proposed ties early literacy and math acceleration to the board's five-year numeric goals for 3rd grade; she emphasized that Project Accelerate is intended as a long-term structural change rather than a short-term reaction to test results.
