Council updates salary ordinance, suspends rules to pass on first reading

Airway Heights council members on June 15 approved updates to the 2026 salary ordinance and suspended the rules to allow passage on first reading, enabling staff to start recruitment and implement planned cost savings.
Staff said the updates include several positions not carried forward from the 2025 ordinance (accountant classifications, a recreation center and programs manager, a public records manager and analyst). After concerns from council about eliminating a director role, staff clarified the updated proposal does not remove that position. The proposal also anticipates a reorganization that moves park maintenance duties to Public Works to gain operational efficiencies.
A council motion to suspend the rules to pass the ordinance on first reading was made and seconded; the suspension carried unanimously and council then approved the updated salary ordinance on first reading. Staff said adopting the ordinance now would permit timely recruitment and earlier realization of cost-savings targets.
