Airway Heights votes to recertify for Spokane County CDBG consortium despite limited past wins

City Manager Albert Tripp told council July 6 that recertification is required every three years for jurisdictions participating in the Spokane County CDBG urban consortium. Tripp noted the city has not received a successful CDBG award since roughly 2013, though the city has applied for projects including water and sewer extensions.
Tripp said participating in the consortium means the cities within the county compete for entitlement dollars as a group; the alternative is to compete at the state level if the city chose not to recertify. "If the city were not to recertify and participate in this, then it would be competing at the state level," Tripp said, but he also recommended staying in the consortium for now and reviewing competitiveness before the next recertification.
Council voted unanimously to recertify and remain part of the Spokane County urban consortium; members asked staff to evaluate comparative competitiveness and report back before the next cycle.
