County accepts donations to complete school-safety equipment purchases; law-enforcement portion seeks additional funds

Lavaca County accepted monetary donations on July 27 that completed the school portion of the Lavaca Strong School Safety Initiative and advanced work on the law-enforcement portion.
Nila Yackel, the county's school safety liaison (introduced at the meeting), reported the schools' equipment purchase is complete at a cost of $86,100 and thanked several donors present at the meeting. "We have completed that portion of the project, which was $86,100. And we could not have done it without the generous donors that we've had," Yackel said, naming representatives from the Kluck Foundation and donors Charles Quinta Jr. and Annie Rodriguez. She also identified Billy Gerke, owner of Forever Last Hunting Products and Brush the Bay Outfitters, as a donor and said there was an anonymous gift that helped finish the school portion.
Yackel said the law-enforcement portion of the project—equipment for deputies—is estimated at about $193,000 to $194,000 and that a large promised donation and a grant application (due this week) may complete that work. The court moved and approved accepting the monetary donations for the sheriff's office school-safety initiative and invited donors and officials to pose for a photograph following the vote.
