Select Board places non-binding regional high school question on November warrant

The Wiscasset Select Board voted 5-0 to place a non-binding referendum question on the Nov. 3, 2026 Town Meeting warrant asking: 'Should Wiscasset explore the possibility of a single regional high school serving students from multiple area towns?'
Sarah Whitfield moved to place the question on the warrant. During discussion, public commenter Edward Polewarczyk said the town should first address local school issues — citing behavior, performance below the state average, and attendance — and consider why other districts would want to join Wiscasset schools. Polewarczyk said he nonetheless supported placing the referendum question on the warrant to gauge public interest.
The referendum is non-binding and intended as a survey of community opinion; the board did not adopt a formal plan for negotiations, enrollment, cost-sharing, or timelines at the July 21 meeting. Any further study or interlocal discussions would require separate board action and possible regional coordination.
