The Jamaica Select Board voted to adopt updated road and bridge standards on March 23 that will require culverts crossing perennial streams to be at least 18 inches in diameter when replaced or when a road section is reconstructed.
Greg presented the revisions and explained the change is intended to respond to more frequent larger storms and to bring town practice in line with resilience goals. "This is getting at a little bit of, pushing that a little harder, I guess, to say that it's required to meet our town road standards," Greg said. The motion to adopt the standards was seconded and passed by voice vote.
Board members noted many existing culverts already meet the new size standard, especially after replacements made following the July 2023 storms, and that upgrades would be required at the time of replacement rather than as an immediate mandate to remove functioning culverts.
