Superintendent Brian Rentsch told the board on Feb. 9 that the district’s financial forecast, recent facilities reports and the capital plan warrant exploring options to reduce costs, and that building consolidation is a possibility.
Rentsch said the board needs “plan B and C” and 1‑, 3‑, 5‑ and 7‑year capital plans for each building so the board can evaluate consolidation and other cost‑saving approaches. Several board members—Mrs. Host, Ms. Campbell and Mrs. Grandison—expressed agreement that options must be developed. The board directed Rentsch to work with administrators to formulate options, including the possibility of closing a building.
The discussion followed administrative reports that detailed several recent facilities failures (frozen lines that broke a sprinkler line, a failing 20‑year air handler in the high‑school gym/cafeteria, boiler repairs and rooftop unit work) and the identification of the high‑school fire alarm system as end‑of‑life and increasingly difficult to maintain. The board did not vote on closures or take immediate consolidation action at the Feb. 9 meeting; it asked staff to present specific options and capital plans for further consideration.
