Parents tell Echo SD board they are concerned about classroom placements and preschool evaluation

Two parents used the board's public-comment period to press the district on teacher performance and preschool oversight. "I'm coming as a parent of 2 3rd graders and 2 1st graders that go here to school," said Kenzie McCoy, who identified herself as a parent and pediatric-trained clinician, urging the board to prioritize high-quality teachers in every elementary grade. McCoy said she has received unsolicited concerns from current and past parents about "Mrs. Robinson" teaching through fourth grade and emphasized that fourth grade is a critical time for cognitive development.

Another commenter, Stephanie Morrison, said she filed a formal complaint with "Mr. Smith" about a preschool teacher's conduct two years ago and asked whether preschool teachers receive formal evaluations. "We did a formal complaint to Mr. Smith about our situation that we had with our daughter," Morrison said, and she pressed the board to explain why Mrs. Owen was placed on a plan of assistance only recently if concerns allegedly dated back several years. Morrison said parents had gathered signed letters and offered to provide them to the district.

The board did not take action during public comment; Chair reminded speakers this is not a debate and asked commenters to indicate if they wanted a district response. The Superintendent later noted the district has updated enrollment and program procedures and offered to follow up on procedural questions raised about evaluations and complaint intake.
