Board approves closing Smyth County convenience stations on Wednesdays; some remote stations to close Thursdays

The Smyth County Board of Supervisors moved to adopt a solid-waste committee recommendation that would close all convenience stations in the county on Wednesdays, and close three remote stations on Thursdays. The committee said the change is a budget-driven measure intended to mirror Washington County's schedule and to simplify hours across the network.
The committee reported it would implement changes mid-August if the board approved, and would update signage, publish notices on the county Facebook page and website, and post notices at stations. A committee member noted the risk that differing closing and opening times across counties might produce short-term influxes but said the county will monitor patterns. "If approved tonight, this will be on Facebook, this will be on the website, there'll be signs on cans," the committee member said.
The recommendation came from the solid-waste committee, was moved by Atkins District Supervisor Charles Atkins and seconded by Norfolk District Supervisor Rick Billings as a committee recommendation, and was reported to the board as unanimously approved by the committee. Board members asked staff to ensure robust citizen communication, noting some residents do not use social media and signage will be necessary.
