The Smyth County Board of Supervisors voted 6–1 on July 23 to change the county's tax billing schedule for tax year 2027. The approved schedule sets real-estate tax due dates to June 5 and December 5, and personal-property taxes due October 5. The board and staff emphasized the change does not change the total amount due for taxpayers — it spreads payment timing across the year.
Staff said the schedule was advertised and a public hearing was held July 9. During the meeting staff clarified the October 5 personal-property date was included as an optional contingency during planning, but the board's motion followed the advertised schedule (June 5/December 5 real estate; October 5 personal property). "That does not change the amount. That only just splits that up throughout the year," a staff member said.
The vote was recorded by roll call: Supervisor Atkins voted No; Supervisors Sturgill, Billings, Ratliff, Wagner, Perez and Cole voted Yes. The chairman announced the motion passed 6–1. Board members said the split is intended to help taxpayers manage payments and help the county smooth revenue timing, though some members pressed staff about communication and potential confusion for residents.
The board recessed after the vote and continued other business on the third floor.
