Tift County commissioners approve zoning change to allow indoor shooting ranges in industrial districts

The Tift County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 9 approved a zoning text amendment to add "indoor shooting range" as a permissible use with supplemental standards in the WLI (Wholesale/Light Industrial) and HI (Heavy Industrial) zoning districts.
Community Development Services Director Chad Branch told the board the Planning Commission "has considered the application and recommends approval," and the board voted to adopt Resolution No. 2026-04. Commissioner Melissa Hughes asked that two questions be placed on the record: "are there or will there be range officers?" and "are there any restrictions on the types of guns and ammo?" County Attorney Anthony Rowell opened the public hearing and, with no members of the public speaking, closed it before the board acted.
Commissioner Tyler Riddle moved to approve TC-TA-26-01/Resolution No. 2026-04; Commissioner Paul Webb seconded and the motion carried 6-0. The amendment will allow indoor ranges in the specified industrial zones subject to the supplemental standards in the Unified Development Code; the effective date and any implementing administrative rules were not specified in the public record.
