Brian Hulet, chair of the Payson Economic Development Board, presented the board’s annual report to the Payson City Council on Jan. 7, outlining committee activities, commercial projects and plans for 2026. He described the board’s role in promoting local businesses and invited council and community participation in board committees.
Kris Phillips said the Golf Event Committee’s tournament — now in its 10th year — has grown to attract businesses and dignitaries and serves as a downtown economic draw. Robert Mills reported the Business Retention Committee has added members and held a networking event at the movie theater that attracted about 40 business owners; the committee’s stated goal is direct outreach to identify challenges and opportunities faced by local businesses. Mark Kershaw described an education committee partnership with UVU and MTech that aims to connect students to Payson-area business opportunities.
Ty Jones said he has aligned efforts with citizens, business owners and the city through a Downtown Alliance and Initiative to promote Main Street and pursue preservation and tourism grants. Hulet also highlighted the Payson Innovation Center located in the MTech building as a tool for entrepreneurs, and he summarized completed and ongoing commercial and industrial projects and strategic projects planned for 2026. The board’s report emphasized outreach and grant-seeking to support downtown and business growth.
