Resident urges inclusive coalition and education around historic preservation in Lawrence

Marsha Epstein, a resident who submitted a letter in the HRC packet, used her allotted public-comment time to call for a broad, inclusive coalition to educate Lawrence residents about historic preservation and the process for designating contributing properties. Epstein said misinformation and secondhand stories can distort public understanding and called for community education led by multiple organizations, including the Lawrence Preservation Alliance, Watkins Museum and the Lawrence Public Library.
"I think this community needs a coalition that will help people understand what historic preservation really is about as a...way it benefits our community," Epstein said, asking the HRC and staff to consider convening educational programming and to include groups representing Spanish speakers and people of lower incomes. Commissioners thanked Epstein and noted staff had already been in discussion with the Lawrence Preservation Alliance about preservation-month programming and potential HPF grant applications to support outreach.
