Park Rapids council approves first reading to allow combining clerk and treasurer duties

The Park Rapids City Council voted unanimously on Sept. 9 to approve the first reading of Ordinance 636, amending City Code Section 30.43 to permit the combination of certain municipal offices. City Attorney Pat Bakken told the council the existing code contained inconsistencies with state law and that it is “common to have someone who serves both roles” such as clerk and treasurer.
Administrator Angel Weasner explained the change follows the recent resignation of the city clerk and said the clerk position has been advertised and that applications have been received. She told the council the amendment provides flexibility should there be another vacancy and noted she does not want the clerk position permanently. The motion to approve the ordinance on first reading was made by Councilmember Joe Christensen, seconded by Jeremy Engholm, and carried unanimously. The ordinance now proceeds under the city’s ordinance-adoption process.
