UN Secretary‑General Antonio Mudares urges global support for Syria’s reconstruction

Antonio Mudares, Secretary‑General of the United Nations, concluded a two‑day visit to Syria and urged the international community to “spare no effort” to support both the Syrian people and the Syrian government in a transition he described as a rare moment of responsibility and possibility. He said recovery will require political support, economic engagement and private and institutional investment.

"Syria needs investment in its people, its economy, and its institutions," Mudares said, adding that international financial institutions, states and companies must reengage to help rebuild infrastructure, revive livelihoods and strengthen health and education systems. He framed reconstruction as both a humanitarian imperative and a regional interest: a stable, prosperous Syria, he said, will benefit the region and beyond.

Mudares welcomed steps that had eased some sanctions but called for their full removal, saying recovery will depend on broader reengagement. He also pressed for programs to support safe, voluntary and dignified returns of refugees and internally displaced people and for targeted assistance to create economic opportunities for young Syrians. The press conference followed meetings with Syrian political leaders, civil society groups and local communities.
