The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) announced the appointment of South Sudanese Olympian and professional basketball player Wenyan Gabriel as its newest goodwill ambassador, spokesperson Farhan said.
Farhan recounted Gabriel's background: born in Khartoum to parents who fled civil war, resettled to the United States at age two, later played in the NBA and represented South Sudan at the 2024 Olympics, and has supported refugees and UNHCR since returning to South Sudan in 2022. The appointment comes as UNHCR marks the 75th anniversary of the Refugee Convention.
