Commission refocuses 16th Street traffic study to typical weekday conditions, plans seven-count locations

The Speedway Redevelopment Commission discussed refinements to the 16th Street corridor traffic study under new business. Economic Director Kyle Markley said the team will reschedule traffic counts to represent a typical weekday rather than a Brickyard event day so the data can support future grant applications.
"So we're gonna change things up a little, to have, make sure we get the date correct on when we want the traffic study to happen, ensure that we get all the necessary items in the traffic study that we need to be able to apply for future grants," said Economic Director Kyle Markley. Chair added that using the Brickyard day would not reflect normal conditions: "we figured that wasn't a good day to try."
Markley said the study will take counts at about seven different locations along the corridor and include speed analysis and other metrics; staff and the consultant Kimberly Horn are finalizing design concepts and community engagement steps. The commission expects to see a finalized proposal at its next hearing and asked staff to return with results from the weekday counts once completed.
No firm timeline for final report delivery was set beyond the expectation that draft results would be presented at the next SRC meeting.
