Commission to add flashing beacons and median boulders at Allentor roundabout to boost pedestrian safety
Summary
Economic Director Kyle Markley told the Speedway Redevelopment Commission the town plans to install rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFBs) at the Allentor senior roundabout around Aug. 10 and add boulders in medians on Crawfordsville Road and 16th Street to protect pedestrians; maintenance will be handled by DPW under an MOU to council.

Chair opened the meeting and invited the Economic Director to give his report, which focused in part on pedestrian safety work around the Allentor senior roundabout. Economic Director Kyle Markley said the commission expects the equipment to be installed in early August and that a memorandum of understanding will ask the town's Department of Public Works to maintain the devices after installation.
"We will, hopefully, around August 10, start the installation of the RRFBs," said Economic Director Kyle Markley. He also said the commission plans to add "some boulders along the median off of Crawfordsville Road and 16th Street" to provide more protection for pedestrians crossing the roundabout. Chair noted the devices will be an added safety element for pedestrians.
The commission said a separate MOU will be presented to the Town Council to transfer ongoing maintenance responsibility to DPW after installation. The RRFBs (rectangular rapid flashing beacons) function like the crossing at Lynnhurst, where a pedestrian-activated beacon increases driver awareness. The director said the median boulders and the RRFBs are intended to complement the roundabout improvements already underway and that the work should be completed around the end of August or soon after installation.
The commission did not set a final completion date during the meeting and said it would provide further updates to the Town Council and the community as installation and maintenance arrangements are finalized.
